Mental Health Care

mental health care
what are some major flaws in the mental health care system?

so the mental health care system obviously has a lot of issues that leaves people with mental illnesses unable to get the help they so desperately need. what are some of the biggest problems with the mental health care system, what are some of the biggest obstacles that prevent people from getting treatment, and most importantly, what can mental health care workers, hospitals, health insurance companies, and doctors do to improve the quality of mental health treatment and solve these problems?
thanks!
also, if you could please include some resources for me, that would be great. thanks! =)

There is a shortage of psychiatrists compared to other specialists. Not many doctors go into psychiatry.

One of the biggest obstacles of people getting treatment is the sick person themselves. People with the diagnoses of Schizophrenia and Bi-polar disorder often don’t believe they are sick and are delusional. They may believe that the medical system are out to hurt them.

Even people who feel they need to see a mental health professional may not because of the stigma attached to it. A person who is diagnosed with Depression and receiving medication for it may be denied disability insurance as depression is a big reason for absences from work.

Because resources are limited, if a psychotic person appears in the emergency ward, they usually only get admitted if they are a danger to themselves or others. Otherwise, they get let go.

Even a depressed person may not get the help they need unless they actually try to kill themselves.

More money is needed to hospitals for mental health services, and also money for community support to hire mental health nurses and doctors who go to patients homes and make sure they are taking their medications.

You can contact the patient advocate in most hospitals or write your local politician to advocate for more money or resources for mental health.

Hope this is helpful.
